The Berlin Airlift "Candy Bomber" Puzzle During the Berlin Airlift of 1948-1949, Colonel Gail S. Halvorsen of Utah became known as the 'Candy Bomber' because he repeatedly dropped candy to the German children from his aircraft on his approach to the runways. While waiting for his aircraft to be unloaded, he decided to walk to the end of the runway and photograph C-54s making their landing approach. As he stood at the barbed wire fence, he talked to German children who were watching the airplanes land. They asked him if he had any gum or candy, and he gave them two pieces of gum from his pocket. He promised to bring them more on his next flight, saying that he would drop it to them as he passed over them while landing. When the children asked how they would be able to tell which of the airplanes was his, he told them that he would "wiggle his wings" as he approached. #50010 - $19.99
